Outdoor leisure planning and nature-based wellness experiences. Specialised knowledge of Killarney National Park's accessible recreation areas and lakeside rest facilities.
Fiona grew up in County Kerry and developed her passion for accessible outdoor recreation while volunteering with community groups in Killarney during her university years. That early experience shaped everything that came after — a commitment to making sure everyone, regardless of age or ability, gets to experience the joy of nature.
After completing her degree in Recreation & Tourism Management at Waterford Institute of Technology, she spent eight years with the Irish Sports Council's Older Adults Programme. This wasn't just desk work. She was out in the field, designing and implementing inclusive outdoor activity initiatives across 12 counties. She conducted over 200 site assessments of natural recreation areas, including detailed evaluations of Killarney's lakeside facilities, picnic areas, and rest zones.
Her research on age-friendly outdoor spaces has been published in the Journal of Leisure Research and presented at European Parks conferences. But the numbers and credentials aren't what drive her. It's witnessing seniors rediscover confidence and joy in nature through thoughtfully designed experiences. That's what keeps her doing this work.
Deep expertise across senior outdoor leisure, accessible recreation design, and nature-based wellness.
Comprehensive knowledge of lakeside facilities, picnic areas, walking routes, and rest zones. She's walked every accessible trail and evaluated every amenity.
Designing outdoor spaces that work for older adults and people with mobility challenges. Not an afterthought — built in from the start.
How outdoor time reduces stress, improves mental health, and keeps people physically active. The evidence is clear. The experience is even better.
Risk assessment, emergency procedures, and practical safety guidelines for outdoor leisure activities with older adults in natural environments.
Designing and managing group outdoor activities that're engaging, safe, and meaningful. She's worked with hundreds of older adults.
Guiding seniors to experience Ireland's natural world at their own pace. Birdwatching, seasonal changes, and quiet moments in nature.
Fiona approaches every topic with rigorous attention to practical safety, accessibility standards, and the genuine needs of older adults who want to remain active and engaged with Ireland's natural landscapes. She doesn't believe in one-size-fits-all solutions.
Instead, she asks the right questions. What're the real barriers people face? What facilities actually exist versus what the brochures claim? How can someone with arthritis enjoy a lakeside walk? What time of day works best for wildlife watching when there's less heat?
Her writing combines field knowledge with evidence-based research. She's spent years observing how seniors actually use outdoor spaces — not how planners think they should. That gap matters. It's where real improvements happen.
What drives me is witnessing seniors rediscover confidence and joy in nature through thoughtfully designed experiences.
Site visits, interviews with users, and evidence-based research inform every recommendation.
Real challenges require real solutions. She focuses on what actually works, not theory.
Every older adult's needs are different. Flexibility and choice matter more than standardized approaches.
Complex topics made simple. Honest about what works and what doesn't.
